To support the successful transition from middle school to high school, JCHS provides a one-year Freshman Seminar for all ninth graders. This ungraded class is divided into three components: Health and Wellness, Study Skills, and Dean Time. Freshman Seminar moves with the rhythm of the ninth grade schedule to provide study methods before big exams, writing approaches for upcoming papers, and one-on-one time with the Co-Dean of Students. The Health and Wellness component, taught by School Counselor Julie Beck, LCSW, explores various life skills and topics that can be useful in navigating identity formation and relationship building. This section supports students in developing the heightened self and social awareness necessary to make informed, healthy life choices. In Study Skills, students are coached on a variety of organizational and time-management techniques to facilitate their ability to navigate classes, manage homework, and keep track of electronic documents. Each student also has time for a weekly meeting with Co-Dean of Students, Michelle Matz. This is an opportunity to monitor academic progress and to address any questions or concerns a student may have about his or her JCHS experience. | | |
