Math

The Math faculty supports our students in developing both problem solving skills and the capacity to see the importance of mathematics in their lives. We cultivate an appreciation for the intrinsic beauty and the applicability of mathematical skills through a curriculum that focuses on reasoning and understanding. We use a variety of teaching methods that encourage engagement, and integration between disciplines.

When developing curriculum, our math faculty focuses on new and innovative ways for students to apply math when reading the newspaper, receiving medical tests, purchasing a product, or debating with a friend. Students develop skills through a variety of experiments that include recognizable products, ideas, and scenarios.

For example, in statistics students might analyze the weight variation of peanut M&M’s or investigate the probability that one might guess correctly in a blind taste test between Coke and Pepsi. Students also learn to evaluate medical test results for false positives. Math at JCHS not only prepares students for college, but gives them a practical approach for real-world problems.
