The primary mission of JCHS’s Office of Educational Support is to provide learning and learning disability resources to JCHS students, faculty, and families. Director of Educational Support Yael Krieger works with students on an individual basis, providing academic support and learning-related counseling as needed.
JCHS faculty works closely and collaboratively around designing a challenging curriculum in addition to needed support, and where appropriate, accommodations. We develop and implement instructional strategies that benefit all learners. Student services include:
- Identifying academic strengths and challenges and setting goals
- Supporting the continued development of math, reading and writing skills
- Weekly check-ins as well as scheduled one-on-one meetings
- Encouraging students to become strong self-advocates by seeking out teachers for assistance, reviewing drafts of work, and preparing for tests
- Providing appropriate classroom accommodations as needed, helping students to both understand the rationale behind the support, and how to collaborate with teachers
- Academic-related counseling
- Teaching study skills, organizational and test-taking strategies, and memorization techniques
- Short-term consultations for any student experiencing academic difficulty
| | Since a successful transition to high school is important, all incoming freshman engage in an intensive goal-setting process through our weekly Freshman Seminar. The ungraded, no-homework class is led by our 9th and 10th grade Dean, our Director of Educational Support, and our School Counselor. As part of the learning strategies component, students reflect on homework and study habits, learn to reduce academic stress, and gain strategic approaches around efficient reading, writing, and studying. JCHS also provides support to families in the form of: - Phone consultations regarding student learning needs and differences
- Resources about specific learning disabilities
- Facilitated meetings to review outside psychoeducational testing results and discuss classroom recommendations
- Referrals to tutors, educational therapists, and psychoeducational/neuropsychological testing
- Support in applying for ACT, SAT, PSAT, and AP accommodations
