Yiddish Theater: The Dybbuk

OPEN TO ALL JCHS COMMUNITY MEMBERS

This workshop will cover the Yiddish Theater and through the lens of The Dybbuk or Between Two Worlds, by S. Ansky, Mirele Ephros by Jacob Gordin, and The Haunted Inn by Peretz Hirschbein. Students of JCHS will read excerpts of these plays and then David Mandelbaum will lead the participants through an analysis. We will celebrate the Yiddish Theater’s Golden Age!

Bio:
DAVID MANDELBAUM, C0-Founder/Artistic Director of New Yiddish Rep (NYR) has been producing and acting in experimental theater in New York for over 45 years. He has worked at La MaMa Etc., Theatre for the New City, The Common Basis Theater, and numerous others. In 2007 he founded New Yiddish Rep together with Amy Coleman and premiered his adaptation of the Holocaust classic, Yosl Rakover Speaks to G-d, directed by Amy Coleman. It has since been performed in Montreal at the first and second International Yiddish Theatre Festivals, as well as in Rome, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem.In 2013 NYR in association with Castillo Theatre produced the Yiddish world premiere of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, directed by Moshe Yassur, with David in the role of Estragon. In 2014 the production was invited to the Happy Days Beckett Festival in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland and to Origin’s First Irish Theatre Festival in New York. Other post-modern Yiddish world premieres include Ionesco’s Rhinoceros (2016), and Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin’s classics The Labor Of Life and (2018). In October 2015 NYR produced Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman in Joseph Buloff’s Yiddish adaptation, garnering two Drama Desk Award nominations. David adapted and directed Clifford Odets’ Awake And Sing. NYR’s production of Sholem Ash’s in 2016 played to sold out houses at La Mama and again when it moved uptown to The Theater at St. Clements.
