Songwriting with Poetry

Use a poem to begin your songwriting journey and develop skills in aligning notes, time signatures, intervals and pauses with emotion.

Othello Jefferson will begin his two day workshop on songwriting. The composer of the acclaimed musical, I Too Sing America, a musical written inspired by poetry. Mr. Jefferson will take students through the steps of writing a melody based on lyrics, and the relationship between words and music. Bio:
Othello Jefferson holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a music teaching credential from San Francisco State University. An award-winning Choir Director while teaching at San Francisco’s Lowell High School for 10 years, he is currently the Choir Director at Sequoia High School and Accompanist/ Organist for the Ragazzi Boys Chorus, both in Redwood City, CA. He is the Co-Director of the Training Chorus at the Bayview Opera House Campus of the San Francisco Girls Chorus. He also serves as Minister of Music for the First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in San Francisco as well as the denomination's Western Episcopal District. Othello received a Gospel Music Award from San Francisco’s Academy of Gospel and a Negro Spirituals Heritage Keepers Award from the Friends of Negro Spirituals in Oakland.
