This year’s shabbaton gave our school the chance to come together for the first time this year. This year’s freshmen journey gave the freshman class a time to get to know each other, bond, and create a community that would last for the next four years and beyond.
We stayed at Brandeis Bardin Institute, a camp-like retreat center near Los Angeles. We spent 3 days there doing many things, from climbing the ropes course to going for hikes to playing ice breaker games. We spent our final day together in and around Santa Monica, where we had the chance to shop and walk around in smaller groups. My favorite part about the journey was being given the chance to connect with people in new ways. Being outside of school as a class gave us the chance to be more open with each other without the stress of having homework and tests. I was also able to spend time with people who I didn’t have classes with or just don’t get to see a lot during the school day. After coming back to school from the journey, I feel much closer with my classmates. We are our own mini community inside the greater JCHS community! The journey taught me to be more open minded. It was such a fun 5 days and I am so proud to be a part of the class of 2017! I can’t wait for next year’s journey!
