Junior Jacob Derin has been named a semi-finalist in the Blank Theatre's Young Playwrights Festival.
Jacob Derin '18 has been named a semi-finalist in the Blank Theatre's Young Playwrights Festival for his play "Banana Cop Beater."
Performed as a special staged reading during the 2017 Nu Wurks III festival at JCHS, "Banana Cop Beater" was inspired by Franz Kafka's "The Trial" and recounts the travails of a modern day black man as he navigates a corrupt legal system.
The Young Playwrights Festival is a 23 year-old nationwide playwriting competition for writers ages 9 to 19. The 12 best plays are chosen by a panel of theatre professionals from submissions across America. Winning playwrights are provided careful mentoring and direction from industry professionals to help prepare their work for public performance and hone their skills, talent and confidence.
Actors who have participated in past festival performances include Chris Pine, Heather Morris, Max Adler, Jeremy Sisto, Dee Wallace, Noah Wyle, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sarah Drew, Debra Messing, and Constance Zimmer among many others.
Final winners in the Blank Theatre's Young Playwrights Festival will be announced at the end of the month.
