Girls Volleyball Team Wins Second Place in NCS Championship

Coach Moler's Update from November 4, 2018

Our Girls Volleyball team made JCHS sports history Saturday night, and although they came a few rallies short of holding up the championship trophy, their second place finish (out of 35 section D6 schools), is something they should all be VERY proud of. The #8 seed host Calistoga also had a magical run of their own, as this was their school's 1st ever NCS Championship in any sport, so it was a special night for all involved. In front of a packed gymnasium, both teams played their hearts out, with Calistoga emerging victorious.

Next up, the Girls Volleyball team will travel up to Auburn for the 1st round of the CIF State Playoff (top 4 NCS schools merge with top 2 from Sac-Joaquin and top 2 from Northern to make an 8 team bracket). NCS may be over, but the season rolls on! Congratulations and go Wolves!!!!

Coach Moler's Update from October 31, 2018

"When the Wolves come out to howl..."

And they didn't just come out to howl!  They also came to sing, spike, dig, jump, dance, and shout.  Let's start with the singing, shall we?

In Tomales for the semifinal game on Wednesday night, the starting lineups have been announced by the PA announcer, and then an oddly amazing thing happened.....
Announcer: "And now please rise for the National Anthem"
<Spectators rise>
Announcer: "Uhhhh, wait a second.  We don't have the National Anthem."
<Awkward silence>
And this is when it got cool.  Our team (yes, the team), started singing the national anthem in unison.  The crowd joined in.  And that's how we got started.

First game started, and our girls absolutely CRUSHED it.  It was like watching an Olympic synchro swim team.  Passes were on the money, the spikes went down hard, the blocks were perfectly timed, and every serve hit its mark.  Clockwork.  Best game of the season.  Easy.  25-9.  The home crowd, who started the match loud, was silent.  STUNNED.

Second game was more of the same.  Wolves completely owning momentum, winning 25-17.

Things got pretty tense in the third, for the second match in a row, as the home Braves pulled it together and led from start to finish (21-25), but the Wolves, as they did on Saturday, dug deep in the 4th and found the touch yet again, closing it out in impressive fashion, 25-17.

Very, very, very cool stuff.  With this win, the Girls Volleyball team becomes the first JCHS team to advance to a section final.  And, they've done it all on the road, as the #10 seed. One game to go...the NCS Championship game, this Saturday night in Calistoga!

Let's give it up for Girls VB -- well earned, and well deserved!

Coach Moler's Update from Sunday, October 28:

Wow....another NCS win!  The Wolves came out red hot in the 1st game tonight vs CA Crosspoint, closing it out 25-16 on a couple of big points from MB Emma Yagolnitser.  From there on, it was "hold on tight", as the #2 seed Rams dug in and were determined to not go down without a fight.  The Wolves scratched out a 25-23 2nd game, and then lost the 3rd 16-25, before finding their groove in the 4th and sealing the match 25-19 with some timely saves and serves from Briana Diner.

Great JCHS fan support for a Saturday night in Hayward - both parents and students, and special shout outs to Rabbi Ruben, Mr. Brody, and Dr. G!!!

So....what's next??  With the win, the Wolves not only advance to the NCS Division 6 Semifinal on Wednesday, but also qualify for NorCal playoffs!!  This Wednesday they will travel (yet again), this time to Tomales to face off against #6 Tomales HS, who upset #3 North Hills Christian.  Complete bracket here

The seniors just can't quit!  Go Wolves!

Coach Moler's update from Wed, October 24:

The full moon got the Wolves howling tonight in Healdsburg, leaving no doubt that under-seeded JCHS has something to prove this year in the NCS post-season.  Our girls were firing on all cylinders from the onset, with precision serves and passes, setting the tone with a 25-15 opening game.  They followed it up with a convincing 25-12 second game, building momentum with relentless ball pursuit and execution, and emphatically shut the door on the host Spartans in the third set, 25-5.  When all was said and done, the home crowd was stunned, and the smiling, high-fiving Wolves had a lot to be proud of, especially considering all of the bumps and bruises they endured through the course of the incredibly challenging league season.  Senior captain Chloe Ticktin led the team tonight with 8 aces and a playoff record 27 service points, and fellow senior Liza Gofman contributed 5 aces and 4 kills.  This is the 2nd consecutive year that Girls Volleyball has upset their first round NCS opponent.

Next up: NCS Quarterfinal this Saturday night in Hayward at Chabot College vs #2 California Crosspoint, 8pm.  Complete bracket here

Please join me tomorrow in congratulating the team on their upset and wishing them luck as they advance on to the QF.  Go Wolves!!!!
