Physical Education

Building Healthy Habits for Life

Physical Education at JCHS reflects our commitment to developing the whole student. The program encourages students to discover physical activities they enjoy while building an appreciation for the important role movement plays in both physical and mental well-being.

Rather than a traditional PE class during the school day, JCHS offers a flexible, primarily after-school program that allows students to fulfill their requirements through athletics, independent physical activity, or participation in qualifying musical productions. The goal is to help students develop healthy habits and find activities they will continue to enjoy long after high school.

Physical Education Requirements

All students must complete 1.5 credits of Physical Education. Credits may be earned through participation on a JCHS interscholastic or club team, Independent PE, or participation in a qualifying JCHS musical production.

Ways to Earn PE Credit

JCHS Athletics

Students may earn 0.5 PE credits per season by participating on a JCHS interscholastic or club team. Participation in three qualifying seasons fully satisfies the 1.5-credit PE requirement.

Students are expected to participate in team practices and events throughout the season. In the case of an injury, students should continue attending team activities in order to receive credit. PE credit is based on overall participation as determined by the Coach, Athletic Director, and Co-Dean of Students.

Independent PE

Students may earn PE credit for physical activities outside of JCHS, including club sports, dance, horseback riding, hockey, gymnastics, and other forms of regular physical activity.

To earn 0.5 PE credits, students must complete at least 30 hours per semester and submit an Independent PE Contract identifying the activity and supervising adult, along with an Activity Log documenting participation.

Forms and due dates are available through the Athletic Office.

JCHS Musical Productions

Students may earn 0.5 PE credits by participating in a JCHS musical that includes enough dance and physical activity to meet the Independent PE requirement of 30 hours.

The Drama Director and Athletic Director determine whether a production qualifies. Students may earn a maximum of 0.5 PE credits toward their graduation requirement through participation in a musical.
