“A Scandal in Bohemia,” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the first Sherlock Holmes short story. It was first published in 1891 in The Strand Magazine. It was preceded by “A Study in Scarlet” (1887) and “The Sign of the Four” (1890). It is the first story in the collection The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Summary 

The story opens with Sherlock Holmes and his former colleague, John Watson, reuniting. Holmes convinces Watson to work with him on a new case for a mysterious client. When the illustrious client arrives they discover that he is being blackmailed with a photograph taken in his youth. Holmes and Watson set out to retrieve the photograph from its famed owner, but are discovered one moment too soon.
